All 7 and we'll watch them fall....

Did you know that the Hyperion Institute is on its 2557th day? Besides being a very cool Prime Number, it marks one heckuva accomplishment!

Or, to put it another way, we turn 7 today!

Hard to believe, but 7 years ago today I sent out my first column, on why seatbelts and helmets should be optional for licensed adults. I look back on it now, and the writing is shamefully bad, not to mention the number of inside jokes, since at the time the column was emailed, and my mailing list included 40 at most, all family and friends. Heck, I'm not even sure I agree with me any more.

Anyway, if you want to laugh at me, take a look at the very first effort I ever produced: #1 Exciting Investment Opportunities. (Even then I was a money-grubber. Lot of good it did me.)

The rest of the week we're going to be celebrating our 7th Anniversary (or is it Birthday? I can't make up my mind.) For today, however, since you're probably depressed after reading such a bad column (and you better read it: I'll know who did and who didn't), I have a treat for you: the seven best things dealing with #7!

***

Honorable Mention:
7 DWARVES,
7 EROGENOUS SPOTS (ACCORDING TO MONICA GELLAR),
7 SISTERS,
7 AGES OF MAN,
7 SAMURAI/MAGNIFICENT 7,
7 CARD STUD,
7 HEAVENLY VIRTUES,
7 LAST THINGS JESUS SAID,
7 BIOLOGICAL TAXONOMY,
7 WORDS YOU CAN'T SAY ON TV

THE TOP SEVEN THINGS THAT HAVE TO DO WITH 7

#7 SEVEN WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD - In case you were wondering, they are: Great Pyramid of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes, Lighthouse of Alexandria. To see them all visit here.

#7 SEVEN NOTES OF THE MUSICAL SCALE - In case your hatred of Julie Andrews runs deep, they are Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, & Ti.

#7 SEVEN COLORS OF THE OPTICAL/VISIBLE LIGHT SPECTRUM - This one is a bit of a misnomer. Isaac Newton was obsessed with the number seven, as any good genius is, and he wanted the number to match other 7s in his world. Theoretically there are as many colors as the human eye can deduce, but without Newton we wouldn't have ROYGBIV.

#7 Happy Numbers - Right now, if anyone reading this knows what a happy number is, I offer you a seat in the Institute Council sight unseen. Anyway, a Happy Number is one where the digits of the numbers square both square, those numbers are added up and the digits are squared, etc. until you get back to 1. 7 is the smallest Happy number (except for 1, which doesn't count). Here, let me show you:

7^2 = 49

4^2 + 9^2 = 16+81 = 97

9^2 + 7^2 = 81 + 49 = 130

1^2 + 3^2 + 0^2 = 1 + 9 + 0 = 10

1^2 + 0^2 = 1 + 0 = 1

See? Isn't that cool?

#7 SEVEN CONTINENTS - In case you're really dumb, they are Africa, Asia, North America, South America, Europe, Australia and Atlantis

#7 SEVEN DAYS OF THE WEEK - Do I need to list these? Wednesday is probably the best, if only because of whom it is named after. (Surely you recognize the pic?)

and the Number Seven thing having to do with 7....

#7 SEVEN DEADLY SINS - Too bad the Seven Heavenly Virtues only made Honorable Mention, but it's that kind of world. Count 'em down with me: Greed, Envy, Sloth, Wrath, Gluttony, Pride, and everybody's favorite....

Make sure you come back the next two days...there's an anniversary party you absolutely will not want to miss!

I miss the Potpourri Columns. Can we get one for old times sake?

What a truly miraculous run!

From slave labor in the South to life on the lam; I have relished the tales, the trials, and the tirades of all that is Hyperion.

Thus I raise my glass to The Inspirational, The Indefatigable, The Incomparable...

Here's to the next seven times seven years of glory! Should we all achieve but a seventh of your greatness, the world would be transformed!

I had no idea what happy numbers were, and thanks to you I have now discovered a new obsession.

Thanks for that.

And happy whatever day.

Dominique - 'Preciate

Koz - Yes, you were there from the beginning, which makes you partly to blame. Potpourri columns have basically been replaced by Monkey Barn, but I think I can pull together one every now and then.

Bogart - You ain't seen nothin' yet

Sparky Duck - 7th Inning Stretch has become too choreographed and cliche to be truly worthy of acclaim

Lady Jane Scarlett - Well, if you went and read the first column, you'd see it was posted March 28, 2000. I know you live in Michigan (where they don't do math), so I'll help: 2007 - 2000 = 7

Dragon - Who you calling little (and where are you getting your information?)

Petunia - Do I know you? Are you new here? Are you named after a flower?
